History
The Italian Sixth Army was established during the middle of the war to protect Italian territory. Its primary mission was to guard Sicily from an Allied attack. The army was made up of several divisions that included both Italian soldiers and some German support troops.
In July 1943, the Allies launched a massive invasion of Sicily. The Sixth Army fought to hold its positions, but it faced many challenges. The Allied forces had more ships, planes, and tanks, which made it very hard for the Italian soldiers to keep their lines intact.
After a short but intense fight, the Sixth Army could not stop the invasion. The island eventually fell to the Allies, which led to big changes for Italy. The unit was essentially broken up after the loss of Sicily and did not play a major role in the rest of the war.
