Can this cross be awarded in peacetime?

No, this award is only for times of war. It is not given for regular service when there is no fighting. Commanders use it specifically to praise soldiers for their brave actions during dangerous combat missions.

What material is the cross made of?

The medal is carefully crafted out of bronze. This metal was chosen to show its place in the Italian system of honors. It ranks just below the Bronze Medal of Military Valor, which is an even higher award.

How is it different from the War Merit Cross?

The War Merit Cross is often given for long service or hard work during a war. However, the War Cross of Military Valor requires a soldier to show special, personal bravery under fire. It is meant for those who go above and beyond the call of duty.

What does the ribbon look like?

The medal hangs from a blue ribbon. This is the same color used for many other Italian medals that honor bravery. The design has changed over the years, switching from royal symbols to republican ones after 1946.

History

Instituted in 1922 by royal decree, the War Cross of Military Valor was created to fill a specific role below the Bronze Medal of Military Valor. It provided formal recognition for brave actions that merited public praise during armed conflict.

In 1932, updated regulations finalized its standing as an official valor award strictly limited to wartime service. It gave commanders a way to quickly praise courageous soldiers who led successful raids or fought tenaciously under fire.

Like other Italian awards, its symbols shifted from royal emblems to republican emblems after 1946. It remains part of Italy's national honors system for times of declared conflict.
