Austria-Hungary
Austria-Hungary was a large, powerful empire in Central Europe. It was one of the main countries that started World War I after a leader was killed.
History
The empire was formed by joining the Austrian and Hungarian lands together. It was a very big place with many different groups of people living inside its borders.
In 1914, the heir to the throne was assassinated in Sarajevo. This event triggered World War I. Austria-Hungary joined with Germany to fight against the Allied powers, including France and Russia.
The war was very difficult for the empire. As the fighting dragged on, the government became weak and its economy suffered. By 1918, the empire began to fall apart from within as different groups wanted to be free.
When the war ended, the empire collapsed completely. New, smaller countries like Austria, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia were created from the land it used to own. It never existed as a country again after 1918.
