History
Emperor Franz Joseph I established this order in December 1849 to mark the first anniversary of his coronation. It recognized outstanding civic and military accomplishments without regard to the recipient's noble birth or social standing.
During World War I, military members earned it with the War Decoration and swords to reward organizational work, logistical triumphs, and combat support. It became one of the most widely used awards for staff officers, doctors, and engineers until 1918.
