History
The Austro-Hungarian Army was formed to protect the lands of the Austrian and Hungarian people. It served a large empire that included many smaller nations. Because it had so many different groups of people, the army used several languages to give orders. This could be very confusing during combat. When World War I started, the army was forced to fight on many sides. They fought against Russia in the north and Italy in the south. The soldiers were known for being very brave, but the empire had a hard time keeping them supplied with food and weapons. Many soldiers were tired after years of fighting. As the war went on, the empire began to break apart. Different groups wanted to start their own countries. The army tried to stay together, but it was very difficult. By 1918, the war had gone on for too long, and the empire started to collapse. The army could no longer hold its lines. When the war finally ended, the Austro-Hungarian Empire vanished. It was divided into several new, smaller countries. The army was dissolved along with the empire. This changed the map of Europe forever. It was a very sad end for a force that had once been one of the biggest and strongest in the entire world.
