History
Empress Maria Theresa created this order in 1757 during the Seven Years' War. It was designed to reward military officers who took personal initiative on the battlefield and won key victories, even if they had to disobey orders to do it.
Over time, it became the most legendary decoration in the empire. During World War I, it was awarded very sparingly because its standards were so strict. When the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed in 1918, the official order ended, though a private council continued to review wartime actions until 1931.
