History
Originally named SMS Goeben by the German Navy, this massive battlecruiser sailed to Istanbul in August 1914 to escape pursuing British ships. To bypass neutrality laws, Germany transferred the warship to the Ottoman Navy, and it was renamed Yavuz Sultan Selim.
In October 1914, the warship led a surprise raid against Russian ports in the Black Sea. This daring action officially pushed the Ottoman Empire into World War I on the side of the Central Powers.
Throughout the war, Yavuz fought Russian battleships and protected crucial supply convoys in the Black Sea. Even after striking sea mines, the tough armored ship survived the war and stayed in regional naval service for decades.
