The Type 97 Chi-Ha of Japan

History

The Type 97 Chi-Ha was designed during the late 1930s to help soldiers push through enemy defenses. It used a diesel engine to reduce fire hazards and save fuel on long marches.

Early models carried a short 57 millimeter gun meant to blow up enemy bunkers rather than fight other tanks. When fighting Allied armor like the American M4 Sherman, the Chi-Ha struggled to penetrate thick steel.

Engineers updated the tank with a longer 47 millimeter gun in a new turret, called the Shinhoto Chi-Ha. Even with upgrades, it remained thinly armored compared to modern Allied tanks.
