History
In March 1906, Emperor Meiji authorized a military campaign medal to honor those who fought in the Russo-Japanese War. This war was a huge conflict where Japan defeated the Russian Empire on land and at sea.
The medal was made of bronze and featured crossed army and navy flags beneath an imperial chrysanthemum. The back showed a shield surrounded by laurel and palm branches, symbolizing victory and honor.
Hundreds of thousands of service members received this medal. It became a proud symbol of Japan stepping onto the world stage as a major modern military power in East Asia.
