History
In 1992, Japan passed the International Peace Cooperation Law. This allowed members of the Self-Defense Forces to join United Nations missions abroad to help build peace, build roads, and supply medical care.
The government created this service ribbon to honor service members deployed to dangerous areas outside Japan. The ribbon features colors representing world peace and global cooperation.
Since its creation, thousands of Japanese ground, maritime, and air personnel have earned it for missions in Cambodia, East Timor, the Middle East, and anti-piracy patrols off the coast of Somalia.
