Japan Self-Defense Forces Defense Honor Badge
Modern Japan's top military decoration for bravery, outstanding leadership, and heroic lifework.
Medals & Awards

History
After World War II, Japan adopted a peace constitution and created the Japan Self-Defense Forces in 1954. Because older imperial military medals were banned, modern leaders created defense honor badges to reward excellence in uniform.
The Defense Honor Badge is awarded by the Prime Minister and Minister of Defense. It is presented in different classes for acts of extreme heroism, bravery in rescue missions, and exceptional operational leadership.
In the 21st century, these badges have been presented to troops who risked their lives during major disasters, such as the 2011 tsunami, and personnel serving in overseas United Nations peacekeeping missions.
