History
Austria-Hungary bordered massive mountain chains, so its military needed artillery that could travel where roads did not exist. The Skoda factory designed the Model 1915 mountain gun to solve this tricky problem. It could fire explosive shells directly over cliffs and into hidden mountain crevices.
The entire cannon was designed to come apart into several smaller pieces in just a few minutes. Soldiers loaded these parts onto pack mules or pulled them by hand across icy peaks along the Italian front. Once placed on top of a mountain crest, gunners could assemble the weapon and rain shells on enemy positions below.
The gun was so useful and dependable that it remained popular long after the empire dissolved. Several European countries kept using captured or inherited M.15 cannons straight through World War II.
