History
The Lee-Enfield Mk III entered Australian military service in the early 1900s. Australia manufactured its own version of this famous British rifle at the Lithgow Small Arms Factory in New South Wales. It became the essential tool for frontline Diggers across many decades of service.
During World War I, Australian infantry used the rifle at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. Soldiers valued its smooth bolt action, which allowed them to fire rounds very quickly. Its strong design held up remarkably well against thick mud, blowing sand, and brutal battlefield conditions.
The rifle proved so tough that Australia kept using it throughout World War II and into the Korean War. Even when newer automatic guns appeared, troops trusted the Lee-Enfield for its legendary accuracy and battlefield reliability.
