History
The Medal for Gallantry was established in 1991 as part of Australia's independent honours system. It was designed to replace several British combat decorations, including the Military Cross and the Military Medal.
During World War I, World War II, and Vietnam, Australian troops had received British imperial decorations based partly on rank. The creation of the Medal for Gallantry removed rank barriers so any service member could earn the exact same medal for bravery.
The circular bronze medal features a federation star surrounded by a wreath. It has been awarded to personnel serving in modern conflicts such as East Timor and Afghanistan.
