Medals & Awards

History
The Australian Service Medal was instituted in 1988 alongside the Australian Active Service Medal. It was designed to recognize service in non-warlike and peacekeeping missions after 1975.
Previously, Australian peacekeepers often only received United Nations medals without an Australian equivalent. The creation of this medal allowed Australia to proudly celebrate personnel deployed on global peacekeeping duties.
The medal is worn with clasps denoting specific missions, such as 'Sinai', 'Bougainville', or 'Solomon Islands'. It provided clear recognition for troops working in fragile peace environments around the world.
