History
The Australian Defence Medal was created in 2006 to recognize the service of regular and reserve military personnel who completed their enlistment period. It recognized that defending the country requires immense personal dedication, whether deployed abroad or serving at home.
Before this award was introduced, Australia had no generalized service medal for personnel who served honorably without qualifying for long-service medals or overseas campaign stars.
The medal was warmly received by hundreds of thousands of past and present service members. It represents honorable completion of full-time duty, national service, or active reserve commitments.
