History
The Short Magazine Lee-Enfield, commonly called the SMLE, became Britain's standard infantry rifle in the early twentieth century. It was designed to replace longer rifles so both foot soldiers and mounted troops could carry the same weapon. Its smooth bolt made it much faster to shoot than most other bolt rifles of its day.
British soldiers used the rifle across muddy trenches in World War I, where it earned a reputation for tough reliability. Well-trained soldiers could fire fifteen or more aimed shots in a single minute. The rifle continued to serve throughout World War II and the Korean War, remaining beloved by troops for its solid construction and dependable accuracy.
