History

The Victoria Cross was created in 1856 during the Crimean War. Queen Victoria wanted a medal to honor bravery that any soldier, sailor, or Marine could earn, no matter their rank. The medal is made from bronze taken from captured enemy cannons, which makes each one unique.

The Victoria Cross is the highest award for bravery in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. It is given for an act of extreme courage in the face of the enemy. Only about 1,350 Victoria Crosses have been awarded since it was created. During World War I and World War II, many soldiers received it for acts of great bravery in battle. The medal is a small bronze cross with a lion and crown, hung from a blue ribbon for the Navy and a crimson ribbon for the Army.
