Medals & Awards

History
The Distinguished Service Order was created in 1886 to honor officers who showed distinguished service during wartime operations. The medal is a white and red cross with a crown in the center, hung from a red ribbon.
The award is given to commissioned officers of the British armed forces, and historically to officers of Commonwealth forces. It is awarded for leadership and distinguished service under fire, not for a single act of bravery. During World War I and World War II, many officers received the Distinguished Service Order for leading troops in battle. The medal sits below the Victoria Cross in order of wear.
