Medals & Awards

History
The Military Cross was created in 1914 during the early months of World War I. It was made to honor junior officers who showed bravery in land combat, since the Victoria Cross was reserved for only the most extreme acts. The medal is a white cross with the royal cipher in the center and a purple ribbon.
During World War I, thousands of officers received the Military Cross for bravery in the trenches and on the battlefield. In World War II, the Falklands War, and later conflicts, it continued to be awarded. In 1993, the rules changed so that soldiers of any rank could receive the Military Cross, not just officers. It remains one of the most respected British military awards for gallantry on land.
