Specifications

History
The Panhard 178 was created before World War II to scout ahead of French cavalry and armored units. It was an advanced four-wheel-drive vehicle that could drive equally fast backward or forward. It accomplished this trick by carrying a second driver seated in the rear.
Under the armistice agreements of 1940, the Vichy government was permitted to keep a small number of these armored cars for police and defense duties. Some were kept without their main gun turrets to satisfy German limits, but French engineers secretly built new turrets and hid anti-tank guns to fit onto them.
Vichy units in France and overseas territories used these cars to patrol borders and keep order. When German forces invaded the Vichy zone during Operation Anton in late 1942, they captured many Panhards and used them for their own army.
