History
After France lost to Germany in 1940, a new government was formed in the town of Vichy. This government was led by Marshal Philippe Petain. Many people called it the Vichy regime. It remained neutral in name but often cooperated with the German military forces. Many French citizens were unhappy with this setup. A group called the Free French, led by Charles de Gaulle, fought against the Germans from outside the country. The Vichy government struggled to keep control over the French colonies as the war turned against the Axis powers. By 1944, the Allied armies arrived in France. After the Allies liberated Paris, the Vichy government lost its power. The leaders were later arrested and tried for their actions during the war years.
