History
During the war, the Vichy administration maintained the traditional French Colonial Medal to reward service in French territories abroad. Because communication with Paris was cut, Vichy authorities issued their own modified badges and clasps to colonial garrisons.
The medal was awarded to troops who defended overseas posts in West Africa, North Africa, Indochina, and other French territories. When Allied troops landed during Operation Torch in 1942, many of these garrisons saw short but heavy fighting.
Following the reconquest of French colonies by the Allies, awards issued directly by Vichy officials were examined and disallowed. Post-war authorities issued standard French Republic medals instead.
