History
In January 1943, the Vichy regime created the French Milice (Milice française), led by Joseph Darnand. The Milice was a violent paramilitary force created to battle against the French Resistance and support German security forces inside France.
Members of the Milice wore an official badge featuring the Greek letter Gamma. This symbol was meant to stand for energy and rebirth under Pétain's regime. The emblem was worn on uniforms and civilian lapels by both armed fighters and leaders.
The Milice became notorious for hunting down Resistance members and participating in wartime atrocities. After France's liberation, the Milice was disbanded, its insignia was banned, and many members were put on trial.
