History

The F-86 Sabre was famous for dogfighting across northern Korea during the Korean War. Following the 1953 armistice, the United States transferred F-86F jet fighters to the South Korean Air Force to replace older propeller-driven planes and build a modern air fleet during the tense Cold War.

Flying the Sabre gave South Korean pilots firsthand experience with jet dogfights and high-speed maneuvers. Sabre jets protected South Korean airspace through the late 1950s and 1960s. South Korea even sent some Sabre jets to assist friendly missions during the Cold War era before phasing them out for newer supersonic aircraft.
