Medals & Awards

History
South Korea created this decoration in October 1950 as the Second Class of the Order of Military Merit to honour heroic commanders and soldiers fighting in the Korean War. In August 1951, it was renamed Eulji in honour of General Eulji Mundeok, a famed ancient Korean commander who defended the nation against invaders.
In 1963, comprehensive revisions to South Korean honours simplified the grading system while retaining the award's high status. Its ribbon and design reflect national heritage and gallant martial defense.
Beyond the Korean War, the Eulji medal was awarded to South Korean commanders and allied partners during the Vietnam War and during various armed border clashes against North Korean infiltration attempts.
