Medals & Awards

History
Established during the intense early stages of the Korean War in October 1950, this award was originally designated as the Third Class Order of Military Merit. In August 1951, it was officially given the title Chungmu, which honours the posthumous title of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, Korea's most revered naval hero.
The medal underwent redesigns in 1963 alongside national heraldic standardizations. The Chungmu class recognises service members whose actions went far above the call of duty against hostile forces.
It was widely awarded during the Korean War, to South Korean troops fighting in South Vietnam, and in clashes along the Korean Demilitarized Zone, remaining an active symbol of resolute defense.
