History

When the Korean War broke out in June 1950, South Korea had no combat fighter planes. A small group of pilots immediately flew to Japan, quickly trained on American F-51D Mustangs, and brought ten planes home to defend their airfields within days. This historic mission marked the combat birth of the South Korean Air Force.

The Mustang was well suited for low-altitude close air support missions across the Korean peninsula. Pilots dropped bombs, fired rockets, and hit ground targets to hold off advancing infantry. South Korea operated over a hundred Mustangs through the Korean War and kept flying them during the early Cold War period until jet fighters took over.
