History

The Zero was designed before World War II to protect Japanese aircraft carriers. When the war started, it surprised Allied pilots because it could turn faster and fly farther than almost any other plane in the air.

To make the plane fast and light, the designers skipped heavy armor and self-sealing fuel tanks. This meant a single hit could easily set the Zero on fire.

Later in the war, newer Allied fighters were faster and tougher. Even so, the Zero remained one of the most famous aircraft of the Pacific War.
