The M4A3E8 Sherman of South Korea

History

South Korea started the Korean War without any medium tanks to face the armor of opposing forces. To help, the United States sent supplies of the M4A3E8 Sherman, often called the Easy Eight. This variant featured improved horizontal suspension and a high-velocity 76mm main gun that could take on enemy armored vehicles across rough terrain.

South Korean armored units trained with Sherman tanks to counter opposing forces and support friendly infantry on rugged hillsides. The tanks served through the armistice and remained the backbone of South Korea's armor through the 1950s during the early Cold War until heavier tanks took their place.
