History

During the Cold War, the South Korean military needed powerful modern tanks to deter threats across the Demilitarized Zone. The United States provided hundreds of M48 Patton tanks starting in the 1960s, giving South Korea its first truly modern main battle tanks. South Korean workshops later upgraded them with better guns and fire-control computers.

South Korean units deployed these durable armored vehicles overseas during the Vietnam War to secure forward bases and guard roads. The Patton became one of the most important tanks in South Korean history, remaining in service through the end of the Cold War while domestic tanks were being designed.
