The M36 Jackson of South Korea

History

The M36 Jackson was designed during World War II as an open-topped tank hunter armed with a long 90mm anti-tank gun. During the critical battles of the Korean War in late 1950, the Republic of Korea Army received over one hundred of these vehicles to establish its first effective tracked armor forces.

Because the vehicle had a relatively thin open turret, the crew had to stay cautious against artillery shrapnel and close infantry. However, its heavy cannon allowed South Korean crews to blast enemy bunkers and stop hostile tanks. The Jackson served actively as a primary combat vehicle during the 1950s Cold War buildup.
