History
The M113 was an American-designed armored carrier acquired by Australia during the Cold War to transport infantry safely around battlefields. Instead of heavy steel plates, its hull was made of lightweight aircraft-grade aluminum. This made the vehicle surprisingly light and allowed it to float across calm water.
During the Vietnam War, the Australian Army relied heavily on M113s. Australian mechanics often modified the vehicles by mounting heavily armed turrets taken from armored cars. These converted vehicles gave ground troops immediate fire support when ambushes occurred in thick jungle clearings.
The M113 protected soldiers from shrapnel and small-arms fire while smashing through rough forest brush. Australian units continued to operate and modernize the M113 platform for decades across multiple peacekeeping missions until its eventual replacement.
