The Kabalak of Ottoman Empire

History

Before World War I, Ottoman military leaders realized that traditional felt hats, like the fez, did not protect soldiers from harsh sunlight or keep them cool. Minister of War Enver Pasha helped design a new soft fabric hat called the kabalak, also known as the Enveriye.

The hat was made of khaki-colored cloth wrapped around a light wicker or woven frame. It kept the hot sun off a soldier's eyes, face, and the back of their neck while letting air flow through.

The kabalak became the most recognizable piece of standard gear worn by Ottoman infantrymen throughout the war. From the beaches of Gallipoli to the deserts of Palestine, it was seen everywhere on Ottoman troops.
