The HMS Conqueror of United Kingdom

History

HMS Conqueror was a Churchill-class nuclear-powered submarine built for stealth, speed, and long patrols. Unlike older diesel boats, its nuclear reactor meant it could stay hidden under freezing deep waters for months without surfacing.

On May 2, 1982, Conqueror fired World War II-era Mark 8 torpedoes and sank the Argentine cruiser General Belgrano. This shocking strike forced the rest of the Argentine navy to return to coastal waters, keeping British carrier groups safe from surface ship attacks.
