History
HMNZS Achilles was a Leander-class cruiser operated by New Zealand sailors within the Royal Navy division, later becoming part of the Royal New Zealand Navy. It made naval history in December 1939 at the Battle of the River Plate off the coast of South America. Achilles, alongside British cruisers, engaged and damaged the formidable German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee. After that dramatic victory, Achilles guarded vital convoy routes across the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It survived attacks by Japanese dive-bombers and earned a permanent place of honor in New Zealand’s military history.
