History
HMAS Sydney was an Amphion-class light cruiser originally built in Great Britain before joining the Royal Australian Navy. It was fast, heavily armed, and crewed by more than six hundred well-trained sailors. In 1940, the warship deployed to the Mediterranean Sea to help the Allies.
Sydney won worldwide fame during the Battle of Cape Spada by helping sink a speedy Italian cruiser. The ship survived dozens of air raids and naval bombardments, earning a heroic reputation back home. Its crew received a massive parade when the cruiser returned to Australia in 1941.
Tragedy struck later that year off the coast of Western Australia. Sydney encountered the disguised German raider Kormoran at very close range. Both ships mortally damaged each other, and Sydney was lost with all hands, remaining a famous naval mystery until its wreck was found in 2008.
