History
The Meteor was Britain's pioneer jet-powered fighter plane during the closing days of World War II. During the Cold War, the Royal Australian Air Force purchased modernized versions to help patrol Asian skies. No. 77 Squadron transitioned to these new jets while based in Japan.
When the unit deployed into the Korean War, the Meteor became the first jet flown into battle by Australian pilots. It carried four rapid-fire cannons in the nose. However, pilots discovered that high-flying enemy MiG-15 jets were much faster and could out-climb them in aerial dogfights.
Australian commanders wisely shifted the Meteor to ground-attack missions instead. Flying low beneath radar, the jets struck enemy supply lines, rail networks, and troop positions with heavy rockets and bombs. The plane helped Australia step proudly into the modern jet age.
