History

In the late 1980s, Kuwait purchased BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles from the Soviet Union. Kuwait wanted a balanced military with equipment from different countries. The BMP-2 was amphibious and packed with modern weapons.

During the 1990 Iraqi invasion, Kuwaiti BMP-2s faced an unusual battlefield situation because both sides used similar Soviet vehicles. Kuwaiti soldiers used the BMP-2's rapid-firing 30mm gun to fight enemy units during ambushes in urban and desert sectors.

Some vehicles were taken by invading Iraqi troops, but surviving units in the Kuwaiti military regrouped. After 1991, Kuwait continued using the BMP-2 as a primary fighting vehicle for its mechanized infantry.
