History
The Order of Mubarak the Great, known as Wisam al-Mubarak al-Kabir, was established in 1974 in honor of Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah, who ruled Kuwait around the turn of the 20th century. It is the premier honor of the nation. It was designed to stand above all other medals in the country.
While largely conferred upon heads of state and the supreme commander of the armed forces, it has great military meaning because the Amir leads the armed services. In 1992, after Kuwait was liberated, the collar and star of the order were redesigned to show renewed national strength.
The collar is made of ornate gold with historic symbols of Kuwait, including pearls, dhow boats, and falcons. Receiving this collar signifies the pinnacle of honor and defense of the realm.
