History

Kuwait bought British-made Chieftain tanks during the Cold War in the 1970s. The Chieftain was famous for having thick front armor and a very powerful main gun. Kuwaiti tank units trained with them for years to defend the small nation against regional threats.

When Iraq invaded Kuwait on August 2, 1990, Kuwaiti soldiers used their Chieftains in intense clashes, including the Battle of the Bridges. Kuwaiti crews fought bravely against much larger numbers of enemy tanks. After running out of fuel and ammunition, some tanks escaped to Saudi Arabia while others were captured or destroyed.

Surviving Kuwaiti crews later rejoined the war effort. Alongside international coalition forces, Kuwaiti troops helped drive Iraqi forces out during Operation Desert Storm in 1991.
