The CETME Model 58 of Spain

History

After World War II, Spanish engineers began working to build a modern automatic rifle for their soldiers. They developed a clever roller-delayed blowback mechanism that allowed the weapon to fire powerful full-sized rifle bullets reliably. This firearm entered full service in the late 1950s. The CETME rifle became a major success for Spain during the Cold War. It fired the standard NATO ammunition and proved very durable in harsh conditions. Its clever engineering served as the direct basis for Germany's world-famous Heckler and Koch G3 battle rifle.
