History
Created in 1866 by Queen Isabella II, the Order of Naval Merit recognized outstanding deeds by naval personnel. Like the army's award, it used a red badge to distinguish battlefield and naval combat actions from peacetime service.
The medal saw use across the 20th century during conflicts in Morocco, the Spanish Civil War, and coastal defense missions. In modern times, the decoration recognizes sailors and marines involved in dangerous maritime security operations and international naval patrols.
