History

In 1989, the Spanish government created the Medal of Peacekeeping Operations (Medalla de Operaciones de Mantenimiento de la Paz). It was established because Spain began sending thousands of troops on United Nations and multinational missions across the globe. It recognized the risks and service of modern international missions.

In 2018, Spain updated and expanded its campaign awards into the modern Spanish Campaign Medal (Medalla de Campaña). It is awarded with specific metal clasps showing the mission zone, such as Lebanon, Mali, or the Indian Ocean. It represents Spain's dedication to global peace and stability.
