History
Spain established the Order of Aeronautical Merit in 1945 after the Spanish Air Force became an independent military branch. Before this award, airmen received army or navy decorations for their actions in the sky.
The red badge version was created specifically to reward bravery during aerial combat and dangerous combat flight missions. In the late 20th and 21st centuries, Spanish aircrews earned this medal during United Nations and NATO missions over the Balkans, Afghanistan, and Libya.
