History
In the late 1960s, the Spanish Air Force needed a rugged transport plane to replace aging World War II era transport craft. The Spanish aerospace firm CASA designed a boxy, sturdy airplane named the C-212 Aviocar. The Aviocar entered military service in 1974 during the Cold War. It could carry light cargo, drop paratroopers, or evacuate injured soldiers. Because it possessed large rugged landing gear, the C-212 could easily land on unpaved dirt clearings and rocky strips. It became one of Spain's most successful aviation exports.
