History

In the 1970s, the Spanish military wanted a modern, fast troop carrier made entirely by its own industries. Spanish automotive company Pegaso created a tough six-wheeled vehicle that could drive easily on paved roads and open dirt fields. The BMR-600 entered front-line Spanish service in 1979 during the height of the Cold War. It featured angled aluminum armor to protect the troops inside from small arms bullets and flying artillery fragments. It was also amphibious, allowing soldiers to float across rivers with little preparation.
