History
Moving massive artillery shells and gigantic cannons along narrow mountain paths was a huge challenge for the army. Famous automobile engineer Ferdinand Porsche designed the B-Zug artillery tractor to solve this transport emergency. The system used a gasoline motor that powered an electric generator, which sent electrical current to wheels on both the tractor and its trailers.
This early hybrid design gave the train exceptional power when climbing steep mountain grades in the snow and mud. Each trailer axle had its own electric motor, preventing wheels from slipping when the vehicle hauled tons of metal. The tractor could also run on specially fitted railway tracks when roads were missing.
These tractors moved massive Skoda mortars quickly to battlefronts against Italy and Russia during World War I. Without these heavy machines, the Austro-Hungarian army could never have moved its largest weapons across rugged alpine borders.
