History
The Netherlands tried to stay neutral when World War II began in 1939. However, Germany invaded the country in May 1940. The Dutch army fought back, but they had to surrender after just a few days.
During the occupation, the Dutch people faced many hardships. Many citizens joined the resistance to help the Allies and hide people from the Nazis. The country stayed under German control for five long years.
In 1944 and 1945, Allied forces moved into the Netherlands to free the people. The northern part of the country suffered greatly from hunger during the final winter of the war before being liberated in May 1945.
