Medals & Awards

History
Queen Wilhelmina established the Flying Cross in 1941 to celebrate Dutch airmen flying missions from British bases and overseas territories. Before this medal existed, pilots received general valor awards, but the government wanted a specialized award like the British Distinguished Flying Cross.
During World War II, aircrews flew dangerous bombing runs over Europe and reconnaissance flights across the Pacific. Aviators who showed exceptional courage, outstanding piloting skills, and unwavering loyalty during aerial combat received this silver cross.
After the war, the Flying Cross was awarded to military pilots flying in Indonesia and during the Korean War. It remains the Dutch armed forces' premier aviation honor for pilots operating in combat zones.
